AFTER hanging out with Marcus and Freddie, they both ride me back over to Willowmead. Marcus said he came to help me with taking my meds for the first time, which basically meant holding my hand. He said not to hesitate to ring and talk to him about any side effects, even if it’s three in the morning.

Swallowing those pills is the most difficult thing I’ve ever done. It’s like taking cyanide capsules for the part of me that was hoping to use the “ignore it and it will go away” strategy indefinitely. I try doing it like it’s nothing, just taking some vitamins or a couple pain pills. I double-check that I have the right pills and the right amount of them before popping them in my mouth and swallowing down with a big drink of water. And then I have a minor panic attack. What if I find out that test was wrong and I’m really fine. Would these pills mess up something in me permanently?

Freddie is in my sitting room, but Marcus is right beside me in the kitchenette. After a moment, he puts his hand on my shoulder and says, “I know that took a lot of courage, Pad.”

“I just wonder how much the rest of this is going to take.” I hate how shaky my voice sounds.

“I won’t lie, it takes a lot of courage. But just don’t forget, you aren’t alone, you don’t have to have all the courage all the time.”

“You lot are going to get dead sick of filling in my courage when I’m ringing you at two in the morning whinging about being sick to my stomach,” I say, accepting Marcus’s hug.

“Won’t be any worse than your whinging about having a hangover every morning in Ibiza,” Freddie says, walking in and making it a group hug. “Told you, mate, anything you need, we’re here. Full stop.”

“Thanks, guys,” I whisper, my voice gone from shaky to nonexistent.
